01 吉祥如意，年年有鱼
古巢老乌声鸦鸦，南陂雨干麦将秀。
人家寒食无一月，青箬蒸鱼竞时节。
蒸鱼：“蒸”寓意蒸蒸日上，
“鱼”寓意年年有余。
The typical blessing is 年年有余 (Nián nián yǒuyú),
wishing you to have a surplus (or fish) of food and
money every year.
年夜饭上吃鱼也是有讲究的：
鱼头要朝着家中最年长的长辈
或者贵客，由Ta先动筷子；
又或者是一条鱼分两天吃，
用来寓意年年有余。
The head should be placed toward distinguished guests or elders,
representing respect.

02 大吉大利，过年吃鸡
贵在烧鸡佐黄酒,烤由烈火就干柴。
赐书三水红金屋,愧少平山冷燕才。
四大“菜”之首”鸡鸭鱼肉”中的”鸡“，
很多中国菜常将鸡和凤凰联系起来，
取其吉祥富贵之意：
“泡椒凤爪”，“豉汁凤爪”等。
吃鸡首先要连头带爪，
寓意“完整”、“吉祥”。

symbol of family.
It represents reunion and
rebirth.

people keep the head and claws.
03 红红火火，涮涮火锅
“围炉聚炊欢呼处，
百味消融小釜中”。

一家人围坐桌边，吃着聊着，

相传乾隆宴请官员，
菜单上永远有火锅的身影。

04 万物复苏，春盘复出
昨朝春日偶然成，试作春盘我一尝。
本案初开银线乱，砂瓶煮熟藕丝长。
匀和豌豆揉葱白，细剪蒌蒿点韭黄。
也与何曾同是饱，区区何必待膏粱。
春卷，北方人也称为“春饼”。
据传在东晋时代就有，
那时叫“春盘”。
当时人们每到立春这一天，
就将面粉制成的薄饼摊在盘中，
加上精美蔬菜食用，故称“春盘”。
During the Jin Dynasty (circa 265–420),
people would arrange spring rolls and vegetables together on a plate. This was known as the Spring Platter (春盘).
During the Spring Festival,
emperors would award officials with Spring Platters.
Each platter is said to have been worth thousands.
05 更岁交子，团圆福禄
素衣台案前，巧手赛天工。
雪花纷飞舞，皎月平空现。
清水飘芙蓉，元宝落玉盘。
饕餮世间味，最是此物鲜。
饺子在中国人的心里就代表着
圆满、团圆，
一个人即将踏上旅途，
远走他乡的时候，
家里人都会包上一顿饺子为他送行，
代表着家人对他的思念与祝福。
饺子本身就寓意发财。
两年的交界点，更岁交子之际，
吃饺子，代表交子。
同时，饺子长得很像元宝，
吃了它，寓意着来年发财。
In Chinese, dumplings 饺子 (jiǎo zi) sounds like 交子 (jiāo zi). 交 (Jiāo) means “exchange” and 子 (zi) is the midnight hour. Put together, jiāo zi is the exchange between the old and new year. All dumplings should be wrapped at this time. By eating dumplings, you are sending away the old and welcoming the new.
06 长长久久，越吃越有
鲜鲜鲫鱼骨肉连，热热一碗长寿面。
长长面里藏春情，慢慢倾述旧时恋。
年夜饭的另一道主食扛把子长寿面。
有的地方甚至会将饺子和面
煮在一起，
这道菜有个金光闪闪的名字叫做“gold silk and gold ingots”，
光是听名字就觉得寓意很好，
招财进宝啊。
长面也叫长寿面，
所以吃长面要注意了，
要尽量呲溜一口吸进来，
不要夹断哦，
面条越长，寿命越长哦。
For Chinese New Year, people like to eat long noodles.
They are also called 长寿面 (cháng shòu miàn),
which means “longevity noodles.”
You aren’t allowed to cut them and should try not to chew either.
The longer the noodle, the longer your life will be.
07 心想事“橙”，大“桔”大利
荷尽已无擎雨盖，菊残犹有傲霜枝。
一年好景君须记，正是橙黄橘绿时。
大鱼大肉过后，新春佳节待客时，
用新鲜水果待客也是中国人的传统。
中国人吃啥都最讲究好兆头，
橙子寓意称心如意，
橘子寓意寓意牛年大吉。
Eating and displaying tangerines and oranges is believed to bring good luck and fortune due to their pronunciation,
and even writing.
The Chinese for orange (and tangerine) is 橙 (chéng /chnng/),
which sounds the same as the Chinese for 'success' (成).
One of the ways of writing tangerine (桔 jú /jyoo/)
contains the Chinese character for luck (吉 jí /jee/).
08 常饮屠苏，酒到“病除”
爆竹声中一岁除，春风送暖入屠苏；
千门万户曈曈日，总把新桃换旧符。
年夜饭上，
自然少不了推杯换盏，把酒言欢。
屠苏酒，又名岁酒，
最是适合过年期间喝了。

屠苏是古代的一种房屋，因为是在这种房子里酿的酒，所以称为屠苏酒。

据说古时一个名医，每到大年夜便分送给附近的每家一包草药，
嘱咐他们放在布袋里缝好，
投在井里，
到除夕那天汲取井水，
和着酒杯里的酒，每人各饮一杯，
这样一年中就不会得瘟疫。
人们得了这个药方，
却不知道这位神医的姓名，
就只好用屠苏这个草庵的名称来命名这种药酒。
